This 50’ standard box car with plug & sliding door and no roofwalk is painted BN green with the large white ‘BN’ logo and ‘Burlington Northern’ lettering. It runs on black roller bearing trucks. Built in 1960 by American Car & Foundry for Great Northern series 36000-36249, and acquired when BN was created from the GN, CB&Q, NP and the SP&S in 1970, these cars were finally painted into BN colors and renumbered in 1978. Plug/sliding combination car doors were developed primarily for ease of loading grain and lumber. If the car was used to haul lumber or plywood, the plug and sliding door could be opened to provide a 12’ opening, providing enough room for a forklift to load. When used for hauling grain, the plug door could be sealed to add structural integrity and help prevent grain contamination.
